Artsy Photography
PHOTO CHALLENGE | Shoot with creativity in mind this week, without limits, and all for fun!
In the early 2000s, digital photography peaked and outsold film for the first time ever. In 1990, Photoshop was introduced and what was once an artform in the dark room, became less of a technical process and more digital retouching. Fast forward a few more decades and you have smartphones with all the capabilities to give accessibility to all.
Over the last few years, analog has made some semblance of a comeback, although it will never be what it once was. In today’s digital age, we can always find ways to pay homage to the craft.
The ability to take a decent photograph has increasingly lowered in expectation.
The thing is, “artsy” is not my favorite term, but it does have the most freedom to it, and that’s exactly what I want this to be about. As photographers, with how commonplace it is to have a DSLR and the capabilities to take good photographs at every turn, the actual art and creative process has fizzled. But for those of us seeking to better ourselves as photographers and lean into our creative sides do have that ability to define our “style” in this artform. Without restrictions, what does photography look like to you? If you were seeking to create just for the sake of creating, what would you do?
Lean fully into your creativity this week. Create with abandon!
If you have any favorite photographers that you turn to for inspiration, please share them below.
I thrive on finding photographers who create truly original photographs, that clearly have a creative talent, and have found success by following their instincts.
Theron Humphrey | I’ve been following Theron since his earliest days shooting his dog in unique scenes. Now one of the most beloved Instagrammers, I’m still not tired of his cute dog and adventures.
Alice M | A bit of a hodge podge of photos, but clearly a creative type with a lot of light and shadow play. Filter through her feed and you’ll see some great artistic and notable photos.
Kirsi MacKenszie | An interesting take on landscapes and nature images, a lot of editing involved here, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing (just worth noting). I like the dramatic flair in her images, the interesting color tones, and the textures.
Simone Bramante | A blend of the most unique images and stunning landscapes I’ve seen from one photographer. Simone is truly an artist when it comes to seeking and documenting light in his photos.
