We all have quirks that make us unique. Some are bigger than others and some are more obvious. The things that stand out about you might not be big or tangible, but there are some things worth noting. We all spend our time in some fashion, and that’s what we need to lean into for this project. How do you choose to spend your time if you aren’t under any obligation? What kind of work would you shoot if money or time was never a factor? While the first thing that might come mind is travelling to beautiful, far-off places, think of this project in local terms. Your daily life, your habits, activities, who you’re around, and what you do on your own time. Even if you’re someone who loves watching TV, you can easily set up a small, cozy scene that someone can relate to. Do you grab a beverage and blanket before curling up on the couch? Wait for some beautiful light and capture that space. Seriously. This project isn’t meant to show off your biggest and best landscapes and portraits, instead it’s meant to show off the small details of life that inspire us. Do you love cooking? Reading? Walking? Driving? Being in a particular place?

The benefit from really digging in to find these answers, is going through your photos to see how much of it you might already have. Or maybe you don’t and you need some time to think it through and shoot for yourself, that’s okay too.

  • Who are you? As a photographer AND as a person.

  • What do you like to do? With your camera AND without it.

  • What sort of things are you naturally drawn toward? Whether tangible or not (like drinking coffee or park walks to watch the seasons change).

  • What photos do you connect with? If you save photos for inspiration, which ones stand out to you? What do you love about them?

I spent all of last month overthinking this project and lacking confidence. In hindsight I’m laughing at myself a bit, because it doesn’t need to be complicated. It took going through past folders in this same time of year, a few re-edits to match my current style, and a new folder to collect everything that stood out to me. I looked for wide scenes and details, left others out that were too far off from others, and allowed it to be very personal without being too private (this was a big thing for me).
