Planning A Styled Shoot
PHOTO CHALLENGE | Create an inspiration board or shot list to plan for our styled shoot. Be ready!
Styled photo shoots are a great way to build your portfolio, explore new subjects and styles, and have fun collaborating in ways you wouldn’t otherwise. Styled photo shoots need to be goal-oriented so you have a plan and can make the most of the setup. This is the chance to let your creativity fly with abandon and be as artistic as you’d ever dream of being. You also get to capture photos in a way that you’d want to keep shooting. If you’re adding to your portfolio, take photos that you’d want to use and keep shooting.
Step 1 | What is your goal?
Do you need to expand your portfolio? Want to work on getting published? Create content for a brand? It’s beneficial to know what your purpose is, even if you don’t have a specific shot list or vendors you’re working with, this is how you create intention from the start.
Step 2 | Keep in mind the aesthetic of the venue
It does not serve anyone to force a theme or aesthetic in a location that just doesn’t work. While you shouldn’t change your style, you should be mindful of the atmosphere and vibe of where you are. Let the venue determine the aesthetic of the shoot while the theme is the central pivot point.
Step 3 | Create a linear story
Stories are best told from beginning to end. People resonate and best understand what’s happening when there’s distinct steps or transitions that tell the viewer “this is the beginning” and “this is the end”. Take images that give you a sense of place, capture details, and show how the shoot was built from start to finish.
Step 4 | Write yourself a list or save your inspiration
Are there certain types of photographs you’ve wanted to practice taking or wanted to include in your portfolio? Save that inspiration or take note of it so when you’re at the shoot you can work toward getting that shot (or shots). If you struggle to remember micro to macro, again, make a list or save inspiration so you won’t forget. I’ve saved some ideas on Pinterest, link below.
